The M7s have both disc and caliper brakes. Because of this, they have a higher braking rate than the M1/3s. Unfortunately this does not really help the flat wheel problem the M7s have.

Flat spots are always caused by slip-slide. This is not caused by their weight as some people claim. There are heavier railcars than the M7s that hardly have flats at all like the C3s and M2s. The problem is the Automatic Speed Control the M7s have which causes the brakes to go in full service or BIE.
