It would be a maintenance nightmare for very little gain in
performance.

1) You would need to introduce a differential with planetary gears.

1A) You know what happens when one wheel of an automotive differential
slips: the other wheel loses torque. Would you introduce a limited-
slip differential? Imagine how expensive and troublesome that would
be considering the torque involved.

2) Having the wheels pressed solidly onto a rigid axle serves
another important point that nobody mentioned yet: track geometry.
If the axle were split, how would you maintain the wheelset
gauge? All that lateral force would be on the thrust bearings
of the differential.

PCC cars have right-angle hypoid drive which looks like an automotive
differential but it is a solid axle and no planetary gears.
