There's also a big difference depending on how one calculatesthe "emergency brake rate". All NYCT equipment creates and maintains a cylinder pressure during emergency which is constant for the duration of the stop (as opposed to, e.g. the WABCO "High-Speed" automatic air brake system used in high-speed passenger rail earlier in the century in which emergency applications came on hard and then bled down). The coefficient of friction with cast iron shoes increases as speed decreases. Therefore the curve of brake rate vs speed or vs time is not a constant line. With composition shoes the curve is flatter. Is the emergency brake rate quoted the minimum, maximum or average? |
