This press release is not new, but as the date approaches, is significant nonetheless:

Orange Line Bus Replacement Update
Sunday through Thursday Evenings
Start Date: 3/1/2006 End Date: 12/1/2006 E-Mail: lrivera@mbta.com

The MBTA is in the process of installing a state of the art Automated Train Operating (ATO) system on the Orange Line from Chinatown to Oak Grove. The Orange Line Signal Replacement project will replace the Authority’s existing Orange Line signal system with an innovative, fully functional system. Over the past two years, the MBTA’s contractor J. F. White has been installing new switch machines, train stop devices, track circuits, signal rooms and cabling throughout the project limits.

Once complete, the new ATO system will be compatible with the existing signal system on the Southwest Corridor (Orange Line-South) and will significantly improve system reliability and capacity while at the same time allowing for increased operational flexibility.

With approximately 2 years remaining to complete the project, the next phase involves providing the contractor with early access to the Orange Line. This phase, scheduled to last eight months, requires bus replacement service on the Orange Line between Haymarket and Oak Grove stations. Buses will operate Sunday through Thursday evenings from 8:45 p.m. through the end of service each night.
