The Market El was built by the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company in 1906 to the Philadelphia streetcar gauge of 5 feet, 2 and one quarter inch. PRT work equipment was used to lay the track on the el.

The Broad Street Subway was built by the City of Philadelphia in 1926, to BRT (BMT) standards, so it is standard gauge.
