It's sad that there's no amtrak service to Roanoke. I was there last summer. If you go be sure to visit the O. Winston Link Museum. It's located in the old N&W station thet has been restored. The museum is great. You could easily spend a whole day there. It's too bad this collection didn't wind up in Brooklyn since Link was a Brooklyn boy.

The station itself is worth some time. It has a little alcove where you can sit and watch the tracks. There is pretty regular freight service through Roanoke. The station was remodeled in the late 1940's to a design by Raymond Lowey, the same guy who designed the GG1 (among many other things).

If that isn't enough, across the tracks is the Virginia museum of transportation. It's got a great collection of trains as well as a nice little layout.
