That is true to an extent. Way into the 90's Hollywood was still portraying the NYC subway in that light.....however, over the last few years ago, I think that stigma has lightened quite a bit. They don't do it as much as they used to. The subway is portrayed much better now in more recent movies in general.

You have to remember that graffiti wasn't eradicated officially until around 1992 or so. It took the rest of the 90's decade to shake that stigma. They have done it though for the most part by 2000's movies and TV (in general).
