The Bury and Altrincham lines both ran every 15 minutes off-peak, so I wouldn't characterise these as being infrequent, no worse than many London Underground branches. They may or may not have been reliable, but street-running adds an extra variable to the equation.Newcastle and Liverpool both got tunnel schemes in the 1970s, Manchester dropped the ball and never got the Picc-Vic tunnel. Or perhaps they were lucky. Certainly, the LRTA blames the cross-Newcastle tunnel for the "failure" of the Tyne & Wear Metro. Me? I blame urban motorways, competing express buses, and out-of-town stations that look as though they have been the site of nuclear war. |
