Timers, in conjunction with the trip arm, are designed to safely stop a train in the event the T/O fails to operate the train at the posted speed limit for whatever reason. The Union Square accident proves that their aren't enough safety devices, e.g., enforcing reduced speed when a diverging route is set. Maybe full automatic train control will someday cover all possibilities. The folks who hate timers are blaming the wrong culprit. It isn't the timers that slow the system down; it's the speed limits. |
