Except that the mercury theory of autism is not generally believed by most people with qualifications in either psychiatry or psychology. That is not to say it isn't true; it just isn't the mainstream academic consensus right now. But mainstream academia has been wrong before.

The current theory of autism revolves around a gene-environmental interaction model, with most of the weight on a genetic theory because autism is fairly highly heritable. As Ron said, it is likely a multi-gene, and multi-factorial phenomenon.
