In September, 1985, during Hurricane Gloria, those few of us who had reported to work that morning in midtown Manhattan were told to go back home because of the storm (we were given credit for the day). The #7 train I got at Grand Central was signed "111 St - Corona". I thought surely we would go all the way to Main St, but they made us get off at 111 St, in midst of the storm, and the train was taken out of service and sent to the yard. At that time many of the stations on the Flushing line were being rehabbed and the old wooden canopy roofs were being replaced with metal. We had to wait for the next train at the under-construction station during the hurricane. |
