Posted by Steve B-8AVEXP on Wed Sep 16 18:23:35 2026, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for September 16, posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Sep 16 06:04:09 2026. 1956 - from the Book of First RunsThe East Chicago Bypass on the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad opened on this date, eliminating street running through East Chicago along Chicago Ave. A new station at Indianapoils Blvd. opened at the same time. The bypass runs adjacent to the Indiana Toll Road, and this is no coincidence. Both sections through East Chicago were built as a joint effort between the Toll Road Commission and the South Shore. The railroad had acquired ROW for the bypass back in the 1920s, but NIMBYs (sound familiar?) and other hurdles weren't overcome until 1930; the railroad took its case all the way up to the Indiana State Supreme Court. When the Depression hit, all construction was put on hold. 110 acres of ROW were turned over to the Toll Road Commission, which agreed to build all bridgea and trackways, and the South Shore was paid $850,000 in cash. Dedication ceremonies for the Toll Road were held the following day. There was even a parade in downtown South Bend, but AFAIK my parents didn't attend. They did take my grandparents for a ride out to Elkhart right after the Toll Road opened as far as South Bend a month earlier. My grandfather even noted that in his pocket diary. |
