I was in lower Manhattan six weeks after 9/11 myself right after that area was reopened to the general public, in that case for the Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park, the first major international sporting event to take place in New York after the attacks. You could still smell the toxins in the air in the Fulton Street complex and from a block away on Broadway (as far west as you could go then), you could still see the destruction like you'd expect to see at the end of an acopolitic movie.

You could still smell it from the same spot, though not as bad three weeks later when I was back in NYC.
