On that horrible day, me and my wife were working in Mid town Manhattan. After the lockdown was lifted, time to go home. We were on the first train north out of GCT which left around 2PM towards Poughkeepsie. It was an electric train so that meant we had to change at Harmon. Our train crawled up the Park Ave Tunnel going about 10 mph. Never knowing at the time why such drastic speed restriction, we found out later that the engineer was instructed to crawl thru the tunnel because, not knowing the extent of the terrorism at the time, he was told to look for suspicious package(s). Thankfully none were found. As our train was going up along the Hudson, you could see the smoke and dust rising high into the sky in the distance when you looked out the window especially around Dobbs Ferry IIRC..Images like that are among many I will never forget. Normally the ride up to Beacon where I lived at the time took about an hour and change. That day it took well over two hours. Nobody complained |
