Yea, with those cars there were always a lot of exceptions because they were all essentially the same.

Post Chrystie I do remember the R1s on the B looked to be even worse than the R4s on the D, but after the BMT southern was already all R27/30/32, they all just looked ancient. People were not happy that they put these old cars back on the Brighton line.
