The last Chicago-bound train for the night left the soon-to-be-abandoned station at Michigan and LaSalle Streets downtown shortly before 11:30 PM. A new station at 2702 W. Washington Street, on the western outskirts of South Bend, opened the following day. The following May, Amtrak became a joint tenant when it moved from Union Station, which was shuttered, and remains there to this day. The South Shore terminus is now located at the airport. The city of South Bend has since acquired Union Station from the previous owner, and there is talk of having South Shore trains terminate there, possibly even having Amtrak trains stopping there, too. On a personal note, I still remember when South Shore trains came all the way downtown. I also remember when Union Station was still functioning as a train depot. We met my cousins from Montreal there on a few occasions. |
