I love the R-27/30's.So true about their suffering because their lives overlapped the years of deferred maintenance. Another issue is that they were assigned to yards that were more vulnerable to vandalism. Like Fresh Pond Yard and East New York. City Hall BMT Broadway. These were hotspots for graffiti. Yes, vandals would find their way into Coney Island, and 207 but those yards were busy by comparison and vandals study these things before striking, and chose less busy yards. I've seen pictures and in-person vandalism on R27-30's, that was "top to bottom" or "full car" on trains assigned to the yards I mentioned as top targets. But honestly, you don't see nearly as many R-32 or R-46 cars that were nearly as vandalized and I think it's due to their yard assignments during the peak years of graffiti. |
