W.B.'s Rail Almanac for June 5th

Posted by W.B. on Fri Jun 5 05:56:12 2026

June 5, 1936 - The Book of Final Nails in the Coffin

Manhattan, New York
Transit Commission of the State of New York
New York Railways Corporation

The Transit Commission authorizes New York Railways to abandon all streetcar service in Manhattan, this on the heels of a June 3 decision by a Federal judge likewise allowing them to do so as part of a reorganization of the firm, which had operated one "franchise holder" trolley a day even on routes that had been fully motorized between February and April under New York City Omnibus Corporation aegis due to stockholder lawsuits under such bustitutions.

This decision comes three days before the last remaining New York Railways streetcar line on 86th Street (of which there was also an already existing bus route, operated by Green Bus Lines) is to be converted to bus service operated entirely by New York City Omnibus.
