Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sun May 31 07:24:50 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for May 31 1940 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last full day of service on the Fulton Street El west of Rockaway Avenue, although the final runs didn’t clear the line until the early hours of June 1. This is also the last day of service for the Fifth Avenue El. It is also the last day of transit operation by the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation. Tomorrow the city will take over the BMT. 1950 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of new 4500 Series MU cars begins service today on the New York Central Railroad. They are carried on the equipment roster as 4500 thru 4599. All were built by the Saint Louis Car Company in 1950. Eventually they will be re-numbered into the 1000 series. Most were retired with the arrival of the M-1A’s. Two cars lasted into the 1980’s; 1037 as a commuter club car on a train to Tarrytown and 1077 as a supply car running between the Harmon Shops and GCT. 1996 – from The Book of First Runs The Newark Airport Monorail opens today between Station E (now Station P4) and Station D3 ( now Station P1). Today it is called Airtrain Newark. When it opened the line was 1.9 miles long and was served by 12-6 car trains. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
