yes murdered. Southern Pacific spun off its electrics toInterurban Electric which gave up in 1941 with some trackage going to Key. Key and local streetcar East Bay Traction were bought out by National City Lines, so their demise/bustitution was no surprise.
as to the charm of BART, the routing is poorly laid out, and distance based fares i consider anathema along with refusal to run 24/7. That said , for some trips it works well.
