I think I figured out why this station has platform barriers running the length of the platform, instead of just the middle like all other stations on this historic line.

Grand St is where Eastern District HS is located. Those kids are all Sweathogs. MTA/NYCT had them in mind when installing platform barriers at this station.

Sweathogs is a reference to the tv show Welcome Back Kotter.
