1914 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation for the Pelham Bay Monorail. The monorail had been in service since 1910 running about one mile between the City Island station of the New Haven Railroad and the west end of the bridge to City Island. The single car could carry forty four passengers.


1914 for The Book of Wrecks

The Lackawanna Railroad ferryboat ITHACA collides with a Jersey Central car float in the North River resulting in the loss of three lives.

The ITHACA was built in 1906 by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company. She was the last of the “Barclay Street” class boats and here normal assignment was the Hoboken – Barclay Street run. She was destroyed by fire in August, 1946 while in drydock.

1919 – from The Book of First Runs

BRT Culver Line trains begin using the new elevated structure along McDonald Avenue. This replaces the former surface operation. Train service on the new line runs as far as Kings Highway where connections can be made to streetcars to Coney Island.
