Andy: The MTA came into being on June 1, 1965 as the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority when they took over the operation of the Long Island Railroad. They changed the name to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority when they assumed control of the New York City Transportation Authority and the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority.
