Joe: I remember the great “ART” theatres on Manhattan. There were the Elgin, the Thalia, Carnegie Hall Cinema, 8th Street Playhouse and others. I believe that only the Cinema Village remains. There were the films of Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Fritz Lang and many others. We were able to see films like Metropolis, Cries and Whispers, the Golem, La Dolce Vita and Quiet Days in Clichy.
