The Staten Island ferryboat VERRAZZANO rams the freighter NORLINDO off Bedloe's Island. Several persons are injured.

Mr. Mark Feinman provided the following information from "The Times Record" of January 21, 1954.

Ferry Crash Injures Eight New York (AP) -- The Verrazzano, one of the city's largest modern ferryboats, yesterday struck an anchor chain of the freighter off Bedloe's Island, site of the Statue of Liberty, injuring eight persons. Five of the injured were taken to Staten Island Hospital, but all were later released after treatment. A hole ten feet long was torn in the ferryboat's superstructure on the second deck, and damage to the craft was estimated at from $15.000 to $20,000. Capt. Theodore Costa, 29, master of the ferryboat, said he sighted the 5,100 ton freighter Norlindo through the fog and turned the Verrazzano sharply to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, he said a strong tide swung the ferryboat against the anchor chain. City authorities said the ferryboat's radar had been out of commission since morning

Abandoned: June 21, 1937

The Hudson & Manhattan Railroad began service to Newark, New Jersey on November 26, 1911. This station was known as Park Place and was bordered on the north by Saybrook Place and on the west by Centre Street. It was a three track station with two side and two island platforms. The southernmost platform was used by the U.S. Express Company.

The original Harrison Station was located on an elevated structure over the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. It consisted of two tracks and two side platforms. It was a short distance north of the current PATH Harrison Station.

Pennsylvania Station in Newark opened on June 21, 1937. H & M trains were re-routed to this station and began using the Harrison (4th Street) station). The Park Place and old Harrison stations were closed on this date along with Manhattan Transfer.
