At the time of the '96 blizzard, I was still driving the black 64 Impala 4 door, 283 with three on the tree and was usually parked on the street. I kept a coal shovel in the trunk, but only really needed it to dig out a parking spot just enough so I could get in or out. The stick enabled me to use the clutch to rock the car back and forth, don't remember ever getting stuck in the snow. It was driven back and forth from Northside Williamsburg to JFK (BQE to LIE to Van Wyck) for work, and I had to be especially mindful of skidding with those manual drum brakes. No snow tires either. I must have been nuts doing that with that car, but I managed to get through ok. |
