1913 – from The Book of Last Runs
The Whitehall Street – Stapleton Ferry is discontinued. This was the second municipal ferry service and lasted only from 1909 to 1913.

1936 – from The Book of First Runs
The IND Queens Line is extended from Roosevelt Avenue to Union Turnpike.

1937 – from The Book of Last Runs
This will be the last day of service on the New York, Westchester & Boston Railroad. The final trains finish up their runs in the early morning hours of January 1, 1938.

1940 – from The Book of First Runs
The Board of Transportation accepts delivery of the last five “Bluebird” rapid transit cars.

These units are numbered 8001-8005 and were usually assigned to service on the No. 16 14th Street-Canarsie Line. They would also see service on the No. 13 14th Street-Fulton Street Express. They were preceded by a single unit prototype in 1938, No. 8000. The prototype lacked MU couplers and never operated with the other units.

The Bluebirds occupy a unique place in subway history. No. 8000 was the last car purchased by the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company. Cars 8001 thru 8005 were the first cars acquired by the New York City Board of Transportation after Unification.

This is the day of ferry service between Poughkeepsie and Highland, New York,
The final run is made by the ferryboat BRINCKERHOFF.


1945 - from The Book of Last Runs
City Hall Station on the Contract 1 "Original Subway" is closed.

1945 – from The Book of Last Runs
This is the last day for streetcar service in Worcester, Massachusetts.


1946 – from The Book of Last Runs
Service is discontinued on the “Lackawanna Ferry” between Hoboken, New Jersey and West 23rd Street, Manhattan. The Lackawanna was the last railroad to serve the 23rd Street Terminal.


1949 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of streetcar service in Toledo, Ohio.
1949 – from The Book of Last Runs
The Pennsylvania Railroad discontinues service on the Paulus Hook Ferry between Exchange Place, Jersey City and Cortlandt Street, New York. The final crossing must have been made by the NEW BRUNSWICK.


1952 – from The Book of Last Runs
The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad ceases passenger operations on its nineteen mile mainline between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The company began operations in 1903 and was popularly known as the “Laurel Line”. A section of the railroad leading into Scranton remains in operation to this day. It is served by both the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad and the Electric City Trolley Museum.

1953 – from The Book of Last Runs
Service is discontinued on the City Hall Branch of the Third Avenue El. Hereafter all trains will terminate at either Canal Street or Chatham Square on the former line to South Ferry.

1953 – from The Book of First Runs
The Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company takes over the operations of the Philadelphia & Western Railway (Norristown Line).

1956 – From The Book of Last Runs
On or about this date service is discontinued on the Kingston-Rhinecliff Ferry. The last boat in service was the GEORGE CLINTON.

1958 – from The Book of Last Runs
The St. Louis Southwestern Railroad ends all passenger service on the railroad.
The final runs are made by mixed trains 615 and 616 between East Waco and Gatesville, Texas.


1984 – from The Book of Last Runs
This will be the last day of service at the Elmhurst Station on the Port Washington Branch of the Long Island Railroad. The last train was No. 478 which arrived at 11:33 PM. The consist was M-1's; (e) 9028-7, 9186-5, 9078-7 and 9198-7.

1985 – from The Book of First Runs

The first train of overhauled R-29's enters service on the No.2 7th Avenue Express.
The consist is 8700-1, 8704-5, 8756-7, 8786-7 and 8790-1. The R-29’s were the original "Redbirds" and are now painted in the "Redbird II" scheme.

2009 – from The Book of Last Runs

New York Water Taxi discontinues service on the Hudson River Line between Pier 11 Wall Street and Yonkers. Service to Haverstraw ended on May 1, 2009.
