Sandy was so massive, it hit every single state east of the Mississippi River before turning north and going through Canada before going back out onto the Atlantic. A huge blocking high caused Sandy to make its infamous left turn onto the US. Some areas didn't get power back for weeks as in addition to Sandy, another nor'easter came through 10 days later, leading for some who had just gotten power restored to lose it again. There were parts of West Virginia that got up to two feet of SNOW from that storm.Had that World Series not ended in a sweep with the baseball Giants beating the Tigers, we were looking in Detroit at a minimum of three rainouts with that Game 5 not being played until the Thursday or Friday after Game 4 had been played the previous Sunday before Sandy hit. This was the second straight year a freak storm hit like that. A year earlier in 2011, a freak snowstorm hit the northeast the last weekend in October leading to some areas getting up to a foot of snow and causing huge power outages caused by trees that still had leaves on them unable to handle that snow. Ironically, that snowstorm saw for many areas their biggest snowfall of the entire winter as the winter of 2011-'12 happened to be the mildest on record with the temps not even falling below freezing many nights that winter. |
