That was kinda my point: Smith's moral and economic ideal despised corporatism and kleptocracy, but he did figure that both were reasonably likely outcomes. We don't have a free market within moral sentiments, we have a free/fash/klepto/kakistocratic mix. Look at the 2020 shutdows: killed small biz, leaving torched fields for PE to buy and plant. Great deal if you're in tight with the Kleptocracy. The difference I see is that unlike the socialist/communist/fascist "perfect" societies imagined by unimaginative, humorless absolutists and the naively useful, Smith's ideas can be attempted without ending up in a boiling Pol Pot. He knew human nature was grubby and tended towards corruption, so he designed a system that could, within an intact society turn people's ambitions into something useful. Lose the laws, lose some semblance of morals, lose the 51% level of honesty and trust and Smith's world goes into the same sewer as all the others. Bit of a rant, I'll admit. Hey, I got stress, this is how I vent ;-) |
