Re: Tuscarora Almanac for July 14

2000 - from the Book of First Runs

The first extension of Denver's light rail system - the 8.7-mile Southwest Corridor along an existing BNSF freight corridor, opened from the original southern terminus at I-25-Broadway to Mineral Ave. in Littleton. It is entirely grade separated, with widely-spaced stations, allowing for high-speed operation.

It took advantage of some very wise and fruitful foresight. Back in the 80s, the BNSF tracks were depressed through Littleton as part of a grade separation project. When the trench was dug out, additional room was provided for future transit. Light rail in Denver had been talked about as far back as the 70s; in fact, a ballot proposal was rejected by voters in November of 1980 (I voted for it). The Littleton Downtown station is located in that open cut, and to top things off, the old D&RGW Littleton depot was moved several hundred yards south and was incorporated as a station house. It still has its original Littleton sign as well as distances to Denver (10 miles) and Ogden, Utah (687 miles). And speaking of the BNSF, the old Englewood Santa Fe depot is visible from trains if you know where to look. Perhaps it will be incorporated as a station house someday.

There is a proposed station at Bates Ave. and the line is supposed to extended south and east to Lucent Technologies.
