IINM all cars from the 2000s through the 3200s could and did operate together. I understand the 5000s and 7000s can only run in solid consists. Back in the day, the 6000s could not operate with any other car class, but the 4000s could and did operate in mixed trains with wooden elevated cars. That practice came to an end for the most part when the State St. subway opened. All the 4000s were rounded up and lashed together.
