PHOTOS: RF&P RIXLEY

Posted by Jersey Mike on Sun Jul 13 16:51:54 2025

In 2023 as opportunities to document vintage signaling closer to home dwindled, I made a pivot to the RF&P, which still had a good number of pre-CSX signals in operation south of Fredericksburg. Although I was able to check off a lot of boxes, a few locations proved to be tougher nuts to crack, over Memorial Day 2024 I arranged a second trip down to the Scott's Addition arts and entertainment district in Richmond with an intermediate stop at an intermediate stop at the RIXLEY signal location near Bowling Green, VA. The remainder of the photos ( mirror ) were taken at WEST AY interlocking on the Richmond Belt Line where many of Amtrak's Virginia and Florida service trains pass through.

The RIXLEY intermediate signals are located at Milepost 41 (from Richmond) adjacent to a Wildlife Management Area about a mile in from the parking lot. The hike out only netted one train, southbound Palmetto Train 89, with ALC-42 Charger #347 providing the power.

Next was a quick stop by MD tower in Millford where I happened to catch a northbound garbage train with ES44AC #925 and ET44AC #3288.

Down in Richmond I was just in time to miss the southbound "Juice Train" at WEST AY.

However an Approach Medium on the northbound track #2 signal heralded the arrival of Amtrak Regional Train #158 with P42DC #39 leading.

This was followed by southbound Amtrak Silver Star Train #91 with P42DC #104 and #94.

One might forget that Acca Wye is the wye for Amtrak's Richmond operations, so while Train 91 trundled off down the Belt Line, Amtrak Regional Train #195 rolled by in reverse despite the fact that the train had technically already terminated at Richmond Main Street station. T195 stopped just past the northbound track #2 signal then continued northbound towards the Staples Mill Road facility. Power for #195 was P42DC #22.

Next up was Amtrak Auto Train #53, which I believe is some demonstrator for AI train operation as behind the passenger cars were a data center's worth of servers mounted in so called "auto racks". Anyway, the leading units were P40DC's #835 and #830l.

Trains 91, 195 and 53 all passed by within a single 7 minute span, unfortunately I had neglected to notice the approaching wye move, which is clearly visible in the video during the passage of Train 91, and missed what would have been a fantastic single take.

As Train 53 automated itself down the Belt Line, a northbound CSX manifest freight with ES44AC #916, C40-10W #5227 and a newly rebuilt CM44AC #7509 appeared and rolled past.

At this point my group was looking to move on to another brewery so I had to pack it in for the day. Join me next time for a few photos from Death Valley.
