Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Jul 8 10:52:42 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for July 8 1931 – from The Book of First Runs The new cars for the INDependent Subway are tested in passenger service on the No. 4 Sea Beach Line of the BMT. The consist of the first train was 214-211-208-207-384-387-385-381 (All R-1’s). Testing continued until November 27 when the cars were returned to the IND via car-float. Transport of New Jersey sells them two of the Newark City Subway PCC’s, nos. 3 and 27 as replacements. Tuscarora Forgotten Station No. 3 / Kensico Cemetery Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line Kensico Cemetery Station Abandoned: Early 1983 Passenger train service at the Kensico Cemetery station came to an end in early 1983, certainly before March 7. The station was located on the Harlem Line about twenty six miles north (railroad west) of Grand Central Terminal in between Valhalla and Mount Pleasant stations. There were two low level platforms directly in front of the Administration Building a little to the north of Lakeview Avenue. Prior to being abandoned it was served by a pair of trains on weekdays and three trains in each direction on weekends. Its closure was due to the planed installation of third rail on the Harlem Line between North White Plains and Brewster North (today’s Southeast) and the concurrent construction of high level platforms. Two twenty foot long high levels platforms were constructed at the nearby Mount Pleasant (cemetery) station. The ridership at Kensico may not have been enough to justify retaining the station. Most trips were only one way. Source: ERA New York Division Bulletin / November 1997, article by Mr. Larry Kiss Larry, RedbirdR33 |
