Also on this date in 1968, the second phase of Chrystie St. "improvements" was implemented.D trains began running express along 6th Ave. 24/7. Jamaica-bound skip-stop service during PM rush hours was inaugurated. QJ trains had been running to 168th St. during PM rush hours, but JJ trains only went as far as Crescent St., if they weren't terminating at Atlantic Ave. or Rockaway Parkway. IINM this service pattern didn't last very long. I was in the city on that day! My mother and I headed out to LGA on a prewar Ethel train with a dark lead motor to meet my aunt, who flew in from Chicago for a performance at Lincoln Center. Just to give you an idea of how different things were back then, there was no security at LGA. You could just walk right out to the boarding areas. Once my aunt arrived, we headed for Lincoln Center, where she had booked a room at the Lincoln Center Motor Inn (does that even still exist?). It was back to Jackson Heights on a Q33 bus, then to Times Square on the 7 - my first ride on that line. By then, I had gotten to know the system at least somewhat, and I knew we could catch a 1 at Times Square to 66th St. We said good-bye to my aunt until the following day, and hopped an R-32 D train to Fordham Rd. so my mother could visit her now-favorite yarn store - Goldman's. After a bite to eat, it was back to PABT for a bus ride home. As to why my aunt didn't stay with us is one of those unanswered questions. We would have gladly taken her in for the night. |
