FWIW, the 'Light Rail' brand dates back to the appalling DoD style cost overruns in the building of BART. A couple of victims of libertarian railfan disease (gennerally anti-gov't but supportive of commuting by rail) got involved in promoting the San Diego system. By refusing any Fed money, they escaped from Buy Amerian, and disability access regs. The first group of cars were off the shelf German products. Light Rail was "new","modern?, and not obsolete streetcars. Despite supposed cost savings, rail transit has become another painful example of how US gov't funded projects are grossly expensive, but, they keep the kleptogarch/political donor class smiling. |
