Certain lines on LT share trackage between the tube stock and the lager subsurface stock. The difference was similar to the difference on BMT els where the narrower wooden el cars and the wider steel cars shared trackage. In addition to the difference in car widths, there was also a difference in platform HEIGHTS. On lines where both types of cars shared trackage, the stations had “compromise platforms” that were in between “tube” height and “sub surface” height so that passengers had to step up to board a sub surface car but step down to board a tube car hence the "mind the gap” announcements at those stations. |
