My operating the first J train to Parsons Archer was planned, whereas my operating the last R30 Redbird train on the M line (and BMT) was unplanned.

Here is how that came about: at that time a mid-day M was laid up at Chambers St. on the non revenue tracks leading to the severed Manhattan Bridge lead. It came lite from Broad after making the 8:02 AM Met-Brd. For the PM rush it was an M gap train to Met whenever it was needed. If not needed it went to Met at a given time and laid up. It was the only Redbird/R30 on the M that day.

It just so happened that day the gap train was needed early. When I left Met to go to Bay Pky. the R30 was needed to make another trip and was the following M. So when I dropped back 1 train at Bay Pky. the R30 was mine to take back north. I was unaware that I was operating THE last one till I got around the curve leaving Fresh Pond and saw 2 R30's all by their lone some in the yard. They were bought over from ENYD by a train consisting of 8 R42's + a pair of Redbirds. The train was split with the R42's taking the place of "my" Redbird for the next days service on a FPYD track with the pair of Redbirds on another track with my train adding up to it after it arrived at Met. From there, all 10 Redbirds were transfered to Pitkin Yd.

How did Met handle a 10 cat train which would be overhanging the diamond crossover entering Met? Glad you asked that question. At that time, when FP tower controlled the switches at Met+the entrance to FPYD, there was an additional switch, a facing point from Met, which went from 1 track to 2 track which was utilized for the 10 car move to the yard. When they eliminated FP tower and created ENY Master Tower, the brainiacs downtown wanted 3 switch taken out claiming it was redundant. So now no more 10 car moves to Met but you can do 10 car moves from FPYD by coming out of the yard on 2 track and simply clearing the switch coming out of the yard or even pulling into the station.
