The Kawasaki R142As accelerate slightly faster than their Bombardier R142 counterparts. The sets were basically fighting each other during that revenue run.The same goes for R160 Alstom & Siemens although not as severe, but the Siemens sets accelerate just slightly faster, which is why they don't normally run as mixed. A similar condition also exists for the braking system response times between the 68 & 68As. (Always wondered what did they specifically tweak on that 68/A mixed set that was coupled in service for a while?) If someone has the actual acceleration / deceleration statistics to compare the R142/A and R160 Alstom / Siemens I'd be curious to know as well. There's also a specific name for the traction motors found on the R142A, R143, MARTA Fleet, Boston Green Line Type-8 Trolleys (and some other location), I believe originally manufactured to AdTranz then sold to Bombardier (thus the R179 & CTA 5000 series having the upgraded version of the same traction system). I'm not sure of the specific technical names for these traction motor / propulsion systems. One more long-standing curiosity of mine is if the original MARTA cars had DC traction motors and "buzzed". Can't find any recordings or evidence of this. |
