So the history of RRs goes back to being able to switch in or outcars to meet need (freight or passenger) The geniuses designing Acela (I and II) and drawbarred transit cars seem not to understand tailoring train length to the market.

Married pair car sets reduces the procurement and maintenance costs of various subsystem by one half that are shared between the two cars in the Married pair.

Simpler to leave a train of the same length consist out on the railroad all day then cut cars off and add them back between times of peak service. WMATA learned that doing that was a waste of time labor more the 35 years ago.

As to Acela now that a whole different can of worms. I think the USDOT and Amtrak should have further developed the Metroliner EMU instead of going with the Acela train sets.
