There is (or at least was) a video cassette of the building of the State and Dearborn subways in Chicago showing the workers excavating the clay by hand between 1938 and 43. The State St subway opened first but as was the case with the IND S/O Rockaway Ave, WWII halted construction of the Dearborn St subway till after the war.
