The Richmond Hill crash still might have been avoided if the brakeman of the disabled Hempstead train had walked west along the track with the red warning lantern, as he was supposed to do. Instead, he went onto the track with the lantern but very quickly returned to the train, even though the engineer hadn't blown the train whistle to indicate that the train was back in service and the red warning signal was no longer needed. |
