South Bend, Indiana
Northern Indiana Railway

June 15, 1940

Service on South Bend's five remaining streetcar routes was discontinued, ending 50 years of streetcar operations. Actually, South Bend had experimented with electric traction in the fall of 1885. A copper wire was strung above the middle of Michigan Street, and thus the nation's first electric street railway was in operation, using electrified horsecars. Problems arose and the electric line ceased operations the following spring, but by 1890, electric streetcars were back. The system eventually grew to 12 lines, but by the late 1930s, streetcars started to be phased out in favor of buses. As fate would have it, those streetcars were sorely missed during WWII. The buses that replaced them proved to be woefully inadequate for the crush of wartime traffic.
