But the landscape and topography of upper Manhattan is much different than around 14th st or Canal. South of 14th St, subway engineers encountered softer soil & quicksand during construction. Any seismic activity there (as unlikely as it would be) would be absorbed by the lesser amounts of the solid Manhattan Schist found uptown. |
