I'm not sure those ridership projections make any sense. The only advantages to subway operation are 1) lower fare and 2) ability to siphon off bus riders to Queens Center. The LIRR would take you from Howard Beach to Penn in a little under 30 minutes on the emptiest peak train on the system outside of West Hempstead. The study would have you believe that Rego Park would be by far the busiest station on the line... so why not just put a couple of 6 car platforms on the mainline and call it a day? What's funny is I find myself agreeing with the Rego Park option as delivering the most benefit for basically the cost of two ADA elevators... but suppose you were able to shoehorn a commuter parking facility into Howard Beach or Aqueduct, and provide connecting buses on decent headways... |
