re: small-business owners in Glendale working hard to get signatures against the proposal.
why were they against it?
did they not want the noise or traffic volume of the LIRR, or were they afraid that transit would bring "undesirable elements" to the area?
the latter reason was given, not out loud, in Massachusetts by Arlington residents who didn't want the Red Line extended via Massachusetts Ave. into Arlington Center.


Of all the rail transit expansions that have occurred througout the US in the past few decades, to the best of my knowledge there have been zero proven cases of crime rates rising to a notable extent in areas that received rail service. Some people in suburban Baltimore had been claiming that a couple light rail stations were attracting criminals to the areas, this has been disproven.
It makes sense. Criminals may not be the smartest bunch, but they surely can figure out that train cars make the world's worst getaway vehicles.
