IINM the first R-17s entered service on October 10, 1955.

The first train of R-17's enters service today on the IRT No 6 Lexington Avenue Local. The R-17 Fleet will eventually number four hundred cars with road numbers 6500 to 6899. They will remain in service until 1988.
