Re: Former New York, Ontario & Western shops burn down

I remember way back in the early 60s my father had taken us to his bar at the intersection of Flushing, Irving, Varick, Melrose and Thames (the 5 corners) in Bushwick, and there was a huge fire at the warehouse/business across the way. It was only recently that it occurred to me that maybe he was tipped off that the place was going to burn down by one of his customers, and he brought us there to see it himself since that was his custody day each week.

The building with the bar is still there and is now a bodega. And the thing I didn't know at the time is that the L train is on the next corner. I only realized this when I was riding by on my bike last year.
