Just take a ride on the #1 train, look out the side windows, and see for yourself how close the tunnel walls are. Not only were the IRT tunnels built with their subway cars the same dimensions as the Manhattan Elevated Railway, but the tunnels were narrower to discourage any takeovers by large railroads. Ditto for the Hudson & Manhattan RR. |
