You're not going to win that argument with the ATSF or SP during steam days. Oil helped them cross expanses of desert without having to worry about fueling problems.

And what about early steam days in the US when most locomotives were wood-burners?

Back in the beginning of steam in Britain, steam locomotives were ordered by law to burn coke so they could "consume their own smoke".

In Hawaii and other places with sugar plantations, locomotives burned sugar cane.
