At first I thought it was unimaginable that so many people could die in a ship disaster on a river, with the shore so close, but then I remembered the General Slocum.

The St Lawrence is no ordinary rider. Its basically an arm of the sea with a fierce current. At its mouth the river is about 40 miles wide.
